Founded in 1906 as an all-volunteer department, the Virginia Beach Fire Department today includes 19 fire stations with 470 career firefighters and is an All-Hazard Emergency Response Agency. The department serves a population of 452,602 across 310 square miles and responds to 1,006 fire calls and 28,467 EMS/Rescue calls per year. The department also has a Marine Team covering 247 square miles of water with four fire boats, 1 Zodiac and 1 John Boat.
